What a guy he was

Do you know what a guy he was,
he who opened the way to the stars?
...As flames and thunder raged
across the spaceport,
he just said quielty...

He just said 'Let's go!'
and waved his hand
as if on a small trip,
but the whole world watched him1
soar above the Earth...

You know, what a guy he was!
How he loved the fields of his motherland.
In this distant steppe,
the first orbital flight was
a declaration of love to Earth2

He just said 'Let's go!'
and waved his hand
as if on a small trip,
but the whole world watched him
soar above the Earth...

You know, what a guy he was!
The whole world carried him at arm's length3...
A son of Earth and the stars,
he was gentle and modest4.
He brought people light like Danko5...

He just said 'Let's go!'
and waved his hand
as if on a small trip,
but the whole world watched him
soar above the Earth...

You know, what a guy he was!
What a hockey player!6
The songs he sang!
He was joyous and daring...
He had such a will to live!

He just said 'Let's go!'
and waved his hand
as if on a small trip,
but the whole world watched him
soar above the Earth...

You know, what a guy he was!
No, not 'was'! He prevailed over death!
Can you hear this distant thunder?
See, it's him
headed for the spaceport again...

He just said 'Let's go!'
and waved his hand
as if on a small trip,
but the whole world watched him
soar above the Earth!

  • 1. 'вдоль по Питерской' (along the St Petersburg road) is a famous folk song.
Due to the song's story, the expression came to mean 'in plain sight'
  • 2. 'the first departure from Earth was a declaration of love to her'
  • 3. lit. 'in their hands' but I guess the idea is rather that the whole world supported him
  • 4. more like 'down-to-earth', but that would feel a bit awkward here Teeth smile
  • 5. A character from Maxim Gorky's tale 'Старуха Изергиль'. I'm afraid that's a very Russian reference that would require a lot of explaining for little gain.
  • 6. 'how he went on the ice with a (hockey) stick'

Uplift

Everything goes quiet
And the pulse goes up
And the breathing goes flat
It's about to start
My heart a fist
Beating in the cage
For the one moment
That lives forever
Nerves are on edge
Like polished gold
You wanted the game
You're more than awake
And it's buzzing in your ear
And you count aloud
This countdown to yourself
House lights down
Stage light on
Break out
Feel the push
Stage light on
Break out
Feel the push
Now and here
That's everything that counts
Everything that counts
Everything that counts
I give you this support
That you lack
Support that you lack
Support that you lack
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
Spread your arms
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
I breathe in
You breathe out
When no one believes in you
And demons torture you
Write it onto your skin
You can count on me
Turning around now wouldn't make sense anymore
Better to lose with you
Than to win alone
House lights down
Stage light on
Break out
Feel the push
Stage light on
Break out
Feel the push
Now and here
That's everything that counts
Everything that counts
Everything that counts
I give you this support
That you lack
Support that you lack
Support that you lack
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
Spread your arms
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
I breathe in
You breathe
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
Spread your arms
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
I breathe in
You breathe
The air around us (is burning)
This here is your hour
Use every second
A spring(board) in front of the abyss
Let it pass you by
Go out and show them
The air around us (is burning)
This here is your hour
Use every second
A spring(board) in front of the abyss
Let it pass you by
Go out and show them
I give you uplift
Spread your arms
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
I breathe in
You breathe
The air around us (is burning)
This here is your hour
Use every second
A spring(board) in front of the abyss
Let it pass you by
Go out and show them
The air around us (is burning)
This here is your hour
Use every second
A spring(board) in front of the abyss
Let it pass you by
Go out and show them
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
Spread your arms
I give you uplift, uplift
If you want
I give you uplift
I breathe in
You breathe

Time to forgive

Do you remember?
Our home with four walls and paper roof
Do you remember?
The old tree with the tatooed trunk, we were here
Do you remember?
I wanted to leave, you held me tight, you would have risked everything

But there is no reason to be sad anymore, for where we are standing now there isn't anything we regret
And there is no reason to be sad anymore, for where we are now, it is time to forgive ourselves
Time to forgive ourselves

Imagine, maybe it would have worked with the years
And imagine, I walk alone, but every street leads me to you
And imagine, luck finds us as if nothing had happened
And imagine how you will see me when you forget what finally lies behind us.

But there is no reason to be sad anymore, for where we are standing now there isn't anything we regret
And there is no reason to be sad anymore, for where we are now, it is time to forgive ourselves
Time to forgive ourselves

In every language they asked, to every word they told us, and in the long forgotten days, the answer was always 'us'
The answer was always 'us'

There is no reason to be sad anymore
It is time to forgive ourselves.

Three times a wetback*

Versions: #2
When I came from my country of El Salvador
with the intention of arriving to the United States,
I knew that I'd need more than just courage,
I knew that I might end up half way there1.

I had to cross three borders2,
I had to travel undocumented through three countries,
three times my life was at risk,
that's why they say I'm three times a wetback*
in Guatemala and Mexico when I crossed...

Twice I was saved from being made a prisoner,
I demonstrated the same language, same color
how is it possible that they call me a foreigner
given the situation in Central America.

In as much politically as economically,
for many there's no other solution now
than to abandon their homeland; perhaps forever,
Mexicans takes two steps and they're there3.

Today they'll deport him and the next day he's back,
that's a luxury I can't give myself
without being killed or taken prisoner...

Mexico is lovely but how much I suffered
crossing through is hard without papers4,
you could say that I can remember one by one
the five thousand kilometers that I traveled.

Through Arizona they told me I'd have to cross
and to throw myself into the middle of the desert,
luckily a Mexican they called Juan
gave me a hand or else I would have died.

Now that I've finally obtained legalization
I've recovered from what I've suffered with time,
I dedicate my song to the wetbacks*
and those who are just like me: three times a wetback*.
